One of the most significant reforms of French society was the abolition of the cruel form of slavery in French colonies in 1848. Initially, there was very little criticism against slavery in France. And many debates were held in the National Assembly about whether the 'Rights of Man should be extended to the enslaved people and those who lived in French colonies. The government did not dare abolish slavery because of the backlash that might occur due to the interest of business people working in France. Though in 1794, there were few legislations for the abolition of slavery, Napoleon reintroduced them. And finally, the plantation owners understood the freedom of African Negroes, facilitating the abolition of slavery in 1848.
