Rinderpest first appeared in Africa in the late 1880s. Africa used to have a lot of lands and a tiny population. For many years, Africans did not engage in paid labour because land and animals provided their subsistence. Rinderpest arrived in Africa in the latter half of the 1880s. Italian troops in East Africa conquering Eritrea were fed bad livestock smuggled from British Asia. Rift Valley fever moved westward like a forest fire from the east until it reached Africa's Atlantic coast in 1892. It landed at Cape Town, Africa's southernmost tip, five years later. Rinderpest killed 90% of the animals near the road. The loss of cattle harmed African livelihoods. Planters, mine owners, and colonial administrations successfully monopolised the few remaining livestock resources to enhance their control and drive Africans into the labour force.
