The First World War created a new political and economic climate. As a result, defence spending increased dramatically, financed by war loans and higher taxes. An income tax was imposed, and customs duties were raised. During the war, prices skyrocketed, creating significant problems for the common populace. The villages were called to supply soldiers. Because of forced recruitment, rural populations experienced considerable resentment. The ordinary people's lives were made difficult by acute food shortages caused by crop failure in various districts of India in 1918–19 and 1920–21. People felt that once the war was over, their suffering would end. But that was not the case. All of this contributed to the growth of the national movement within the country.
