Gandhiji announced in 1930 that he would lead a march to violate the salt ban. This law gave the government a monopoly over salt production and distribution. Gandhi and other nationalists believed that since salt is such a crucial component of our diet, charging it was wrong. The Salt March did not distinguish between the rich and the poor as it connected the fundamental yearning for freedom which everyone shared. From Sabarmati to the seaside village of Dandi, Gandhiji and his supporters marched more than 240 miles. They defied the law by collecting seashore salt and boiling it to make salt.
