Many tribes were gradually absorbed into the caste system with the assistance of the Brahmanas. However, only the most potent tribal families were permitted to join the governing class. As a result, most people become members of caste society's lower jatis.
In contrast, many powerful tribes in Punjab, Sind, and the North-West Frontier had long practised Islam. They remained staunchly opposed to the caste system.
