Hence, Poona was chosen to serve as the Maratha kingdom's capital. As a result of persistent resistance to Mughal control, the Maratha kingdom emerged as a significant regional power. With the assistance of strong warrior families called the 'deshmukhs', Shivaji (1627–1680) successfully established a solid kingdom. The Maratha army's core consisted of bands of highly mobile peasant pastoralists known as "kunbis." Shivaji employed these forces to confront the Mughals in the peninsula.
