After Shivaji's demise in 1680, a family of Chitpavan Brahmanas who served Shivaji's successors as Peshwas exercised actual power in the Maratha kingdom (or principal minister). Hence, Poona was chosen to serve as the Maratha kingdom's capital. As a result of persistent resistance to Mughal control, the Maratha kingdom emerged as a significant regional power. With the assistance of strong warrior families called the 'deshmukhs', Shivaji (1627–1680) successfully established a solid kingdom. The Maratha army's core consisted of bands of highly mobile peasant pastoralists known as "kunbis." Shivaji employed these forces to confront the Mughals in the peninsula.
