Among temples of the era, the Rajarajeshvara temple in Thanjavur possessed the tallest shikhara. Early in the 11th century, it was constructed. Due to the lack of cranes and the difficulty of manually lifting the 90 tonnes of stone that made up the top of the shikhara, the construction of this temple was complicated. The rock was placed on rollers, and the architects rolled it to the top of the temple using an incline path they had made. The trail began more than four kilometres distant for it not to be too steep. After the temple was built, this was destroyed.
