In 1904, Charles Weld, an American geologist, and Dorabji Tata, the eldest son of Jamsetji Tata, were travelling in Chhattisgarh in search of iron ore deposits to establish a steel industry in India. Weld and Dorabji observed groups of Agaria men and women carrying baskets of iron ore. They procured the same from Rajhara Hills, one of the finest minerals in the world. However, the area is dry, and water is scarce, so the search for factory premises must continue. However, the Agarias aided in finding the source of iron ore that would later supply the steel mills of Bhilai. 3. By clearing the forest on the banks of the Subarnarekha River to set up a factory, Jamshedpur's industrial town was built on the water near the iron ore mines. The Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) started producing steel in 1912.
