Birsa was born in the mid-1870s. He grew up in the Bohonda forests, the son of an impoverished father, grazing sheep, playing the flute, and dancing in the village akhara. Poverty forced his father to wander from place to place in search of a job. Birsa, as an adolescent, heard stories about previous Munda uprisings and observed the community's sirdars (leaders) inciting the people to revolt. They spoke of a golden past when the Mundas were free of dikus persecution and predicted a moment when the community's ancestral rights would be restored.
