Campaigns against Ahmednagar, created under Akbar's rule, were intermittently resumed, with Mughal guns and diplomacy frequently being defeated by its capable leader Malik Ambar, an able Abyssinian. They had once been an enslaved person and now held a high military rank. Like his father, Jahangir was not a strict Sunni Muslim; he let, for instance, the Jesuits argue with Muslims in public and convert people.
