Many cotton mills were established in Bombay during the second half of the 19th century. The first cotton mill in India was established in Bombay in 1854. The location is close to the cotton-growing regions of western India and the main port. Its creation created favourable conditions for the development of cotton mills. Many of these factories were founded by Parsi and Gujarati entrepreneurs. Gradually, factories began to be established in other parts of the country. In 1861, the first factory was installed in Ahmedabad. A year later, a factory was established in Kanpur. Cotton weaving factories were born, leading to a massive demand for labour.
