Sir William Jones founded the Asia Society in January 1784 to improve and advance the cause of Oriental studies. Jones sent a circular letter to some British residents of Calcutta to establish the Asian Studies Society. The society's library has a collection of 117,000 books and 79,000 magazines currently in print in most of the world's major languages. It also has a collection of about 293 maps, 387,003-page microfilm, novels by 48,000 workers, 2,500 brochures, 2,150 photographs, and 182 paintings. There is also a museum about this society, founded in 1814 under the direction of Nathaniel Wallich.
