The development of cotton industries in Britain affected textile producers in India. First, Indian textiles now had to compete with British textiles in the European and American markets. Second, since highly high duties were placed on Indian textiles imported into Britain, exporting textiles to England also became more challenging. By the nineteenth century, English-made cotton textiles successfully displaced Indian goods from their traditional markets in Africa, America, and Europe. As a result, thousands of weavers in India have been made unemployed. The worst affected were the Bengal weavers.
