In 1854, a spinning mill in Bombay became the first cotton mill in India. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Bombay has become a virtual port for exporting Indian raw cotton to England and China. It was close to the region of western India with the black soil where cotton was grown. When cotton textile mills were established, they had easy access to raw material supplies. In Bombay, over 84 mills had begun to run by 1900. Most of these were founded by Parsi and Gujarati businesspeople who had made their fortune in trade with China. Other cities also saw the rise of mills. In Ahmedabad, the first mill was established in 1861.
