The emergence of the cotton textile industry began with the introduction of the first machines in Kolkata in 1818 at Fort Gloster. The next big event was the installation of machinery by Cowasfi Nanabhai Davar in Mumbai in 1854. There are 125 factories in Maharashtra, of which 65 are in Mumbai alone. Another major cotton producer in Gujarat has 120 factories, of which 73 are in Ahemdabad alone. Other major cotton fabric producers in India are Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore, and Kanpur. West Bengal, the birthplace of the cotton industry, has 41 factories spread across the region. Today, there are more than 1900 cotton mills in India, most of which are in the public and cooperative sectors.
