Richard Arkwright's invention of the steam engine in 1786 contributed to the development of the textile industry in England. The steam engine made the British weave faster than ever before. Before long, the markets were flooded with English cloth. A cotton yarn growth pattern was developed by Richard Arkwright and patented in 1769; it was first used in 1765. The Arkwright hydraulic frame could spin 96 ropes simultaneously, a process simpler and faster than ever. The idea was partly based on a spinning machine designed by watchmaker John Kay, who Arkwright employed for Thomas Highs. It produced stiffer and stronger yarn than the then famous "spinning jenny yarn" when powered by hydraulic power, which spurred the adoption of the new mill system.
