Moreover, he was impressed by the peace and serenity of Shantiniketan. Tagore's vision is to establish an educational institution where human beings exist in perfect harmony with nature. Founded in 1863 to help education go beyond the classroom, Santiniketan became Visva Bharati University in 1921, attracting some of the country's most creative minds. Santiniketan was formerly known as Bhubandanga (after Bhuban Sinha). However, Rabindranath's father, Maharshi Debendrqanath Tagore, found it peaceful and changed its name to Shantiniketan, which means abode (Niketan) of peace (Shanti).
