The three states of Hyderabad, Awadh, and Bengal shared some common administrative characteristics. Even though many of the larger states were founded by former Mughal nobility, they had strong reservations about some of the administrative structures they had inherited, particularly the jagirdari system. They used different tax collection techniques. All three regimes entered agreements with revenue farmers to collect taxes rather than depending on official agents. The Mughals strongly disapproved of ijaradari, which became widespread in India in the seventeenth century. These individuals gave revenue farmers loans, accepted land as security, and used their agents to collect taxes on these farms. The wealthiest bankers and merchants were taking an interest in the new political system across all of India.
