The production of indigo collapsed in Bengal eventually because the farmers were paid a low price to grow indigo, and the planters gave loans to farmers to grow indigo. But the farmers could not repay the loan because they did not get sufficient payment to grow indigo, even though they could not run their households. And planting indigo damaged their field by making it less productive and decreasing the fertility of the land. This was why indigo farmers refused to cultivate indigo and beat indigo planters in anger. This led to the collapse of indigo planting in Bengal.
