Both rich and poor peasants participated in the civil disobedience movement. Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 against the British Government. The movement was about breaking all the discriminatory rules of the Government. Wealthy farmers joined the movement because they were hit by the Great Depression of 1929 and did not get the right prices for their produce because the British Government did not take welfare measures. On the other hand, poor farmers were asked to pay more taxes when they could hardly afford to make a living.
