Gandhi believed it was a woman's duty to protect her home and health and to be a good mother and wife. One of the most important features of this Civil Disobedience movement was the large-scale participation of women. During the Gandhi Salt March, more than a thousand women came out of their houses to hear him. They participated in protest marches, such as making salt and attacking foreign cloth and liquor stores. Many went to jail. In urban areas, these women come from high-caste families.
