The First Republic was established after the Insurrection on August 10, 1792, replacing the Legislative Assembly. The National Convention to draft a constitution was called by the Legislative Assembly, which also ruled that King Louis XVI would be temporarily suspended. Additionally, it was determined that all Frenchmen aged 25 and older who had lived in their current residence for at least a year and were supported by their labour should be able to vote to choose their representatives for that conference. Therefore, the National Convention was the first French assembly to be chosen without regard to class through a general male suffrage system.
