The oldest Veda, roughly 3500 years ago, is the Rigveda. Over a thousand hymns, or sukta, Sanskrit for "well-said," may be found in the Rigveda. These hymns are composed in homage to a variety of deities. Agni, the god of fire; Indra, the warrior god; and Soma, a plant from which a special beverage was manufactured, are three particularly important gods. These hymns were composed by wise people (rishis). Each syllable, phrase, and sentence was painstakingly recited and memorised by the students, as instructed by the priests. Most hymns were written, taught, and learned by men. Women wrote a few. Vedic Sanskrit, different from the Sanskrit taught in modern schools, is the language used to write the Rigveda.
