Gandhiji sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin, making eleven demands. The most important move was to demand the repeal of the salt tax. Salt is an essential food consumed by both the rich and the poor. Irwin didn't want to negotiate, so Gandhi started the salt march with 78 volunteers. On April 6th, he goes to Dandi, breaks the law, and makes salt. This march developed a sense of nationalism.
