The practice of shifting cultivation was regarded as harmful by British officials. They believed that burning forests would lead to the depletion of forest resources for timber. The colonial rule in India aimed to seize the control of resources to exploit them for benefit. Shifting cultivators performed the agricultural activity in a very distinct way. They cleared the land by removing its vegetation by burning it. The ashes were mixed with soil to enrich them with nutrients. Once the produce was harvested, they left the land fallow for a few years and moved to a new region. Again they repeated a similar procedure.
