The Company, alarmed by the size of the revolt of 1857, decided to crush the rebellion with all its strength. It sent soldiers from England, created new laws to make it easier to punish the rebels, and then moved into the revolution's hotspots. In September 1857, the rebel forces were routed and Delhi was regained. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, was convicted in court and sentenced to life in jail. In March 1858, the city of Lucknow was captured. In June 1858, Rani Lakshmibai was defeated and slain. Tatya Tope hid in the woods of Central India and waged a guerilla battle there.
