Iltutmish succeeded Qutubuddin Aibek in 1211 and thus became the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. He was also known as Shams al-Din Iltutmish. Iltutmish was bought as a slave, although he later married Qutbuddin, Aibak's daughter. After his succession, Iltutmish shifted the capital to Delhi, where he finished building Qutub Minar, the excellent victory tower. Iltutmish also created a ruling elite called the Chalisa or the Forty, composed of his Turkish slave.
