Large portions of the subcontinent remained outside of the Sultans' control. Therefore, it was challenging for the Sultans to maintain authority over far-off provinces like Bengal from Delhi itself. And shortly after annexing southern India, the entire region again gained independence. Moreover, there were also forested areas that the Sultanate armies could not penetrate, even in the Gangetic plain. And as a result, these areas were taken over by the local chieftains who established their control over them. However, rulers like Alauddin Khalji and Muhammad bin Tughluq could sometimes impose their dominion in these regions, although for a brief period only.
