  • Breathing involves the movement of the diaphragm and rib cage. The diaphragm is a muscle at the base of the chest that separates it from the abdomen. When it contracts it moves down to increase the thorax volume and inhale air, the external and internal intercostal muscles raise the rib cage to help in this process. When these muscles relax the diaphragm moves up decreasing the thorax volume and exhaling air.
