Ziauddin Barani criticised the Delhi Sultans for their policy toward slaves. The early Sultans, like Iltutmish, were more inclined towards enslaving people appointed as governors. Khaljis and Tughluqs continued using bandagan. However, this led to political instability in the empire, which made Barani criticise this policy. The enslaved people and clients were loyal to their masters but were not the heirs of their masters. As a result, whenever a new Sultan came to the throne, there was an immediate conflict between the old and the new nobility.
