Bengal was divided in 1905 by Viceroy Curzon. Bengal, which at the time also encompassed parts of Orissa and Bihar, was British India's largest province. It was intimately related to the goals of the British government. But despite this, the government split East Bengal from the province and combined it with Assam rather than expelling the non-Bengali regions. The primary British goals were to divide the Bengali people and limit the influence of Bengali leaders. People across India were enraged at the division of Bengal.
Hence, Bengal was divided in 1905.
