Gandhiji decided to withdraw from the non-cooperation movement due to numerous incidents of mass violence. Mahatma Gandhi was the main force behind the noncooperation movement. In March 1920, he published a manifesto declaring a doctrine of the non-cooperative nonviolent movement. Gandhi, through this manifesto, wanted people to follow Swadeshi's principles, adopt Swadeshi habits.
Gandhiji cancelled the movement in February 1922 after the Chauri Chaura incident. At Chauri Chaura, Uttar Pradesh, a violent mob set fire to a police station killing 22 officers during a clash between police and protesters from the movement. Gandhiji ended the movement saying people were not ready to rebel against the government through ahimsa.
