Gujjar mandaps are huts where herders in Gujjar live. The Gujjar Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir are excellent herders of goats and sheep. In winter, they live with their flocks in the low hills of the Siwalik range. Dry shrubland is a good grazing place for their herds. They cross the Pir Panjal pass in the summer and enter the Kashmir valley. These mandaps are located in the high mountains of central Garhwal. They are made of bamboo and grass and are about 10,000 to 11,000 feet tall because buffalo cannot climb any higher. A mandap is also a workplace for herders.
