Indian textiles were in huge demand in Europe till the 18th century. During the 18th century, the textile workers in England protested against the import of Indian textiles. The government was urged to impose heavy taxes on Indian textiles to pave the way for English textiles in the market. The imposition of taxes made Indian textiles unaffordable. These tariffs made it difficult for Indian textiles to enter the British market. Moreover, the industrial development in England enhanced the productivity of English textiles and made them quite cheap. This provided the opportunity for English textiles to capture the market and forced Indian textiles out of it.
