Detailed Solution

The above statement is false.
The colonial government considered forests wilderness as they didn’t generate any revenue. They considered cultivation a sign of progress. They enacted forest laws to acquire rights over them. Large-scale trees were cut, and lands were cleared for cultivation. It was given to individuals to perform agriculture of commercial crops. Jute, rubber, tea, coffee, sugar, etc., were encouraged to meet European demands and generate higher revenues. Moreover, forests were cleared of their natural vegetation and replanted with trees of similar types, which were economically crucial for the government. Thus, the forest cover declined, and cultivation was expanded in colonial India.
