It received official support as a demand from the Indian National Congress in 1935. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru presided over the Indian National Congress convention at Lucknow in April 1936. The Government of India Act, 1935, which imposed the Constitution against the Indian people's desire, was rejected when the official demand for the Constituent Assembly was made. On November 15, 1939, C. Rajagopalachari sought an adult-voting Constituent Assembly; the British consented in August 1940.
