India suffered more than the other British colonies. Farmers were taken advantage of. They were forced to abandon farming and work in the factories that sprang up in cities. India had a large population. This ensured that the supply of labour was constantly plentiful, and the manual workers were so numerous that the British could hire them at a low cost. As a result, workers' earnings were lowered. British officers were also given charge of the farming districts. As a result, farmers were obliged to produce cash crops rather than food crops. These cash crops were used as resources in India and exported elsewhere. Farmers' families were the hardest hit because they couldn't afford to buy food for themselves and were suffering from starvation and poverty.
