These pastors formed groups in their communities, leading to many households coming together to form a Kafila. They did this to avoid animal attacks and to protect their herds. In winter, herders live with their flocks in the lower hills of the Siwalik range when the high mountains are covered with snow. The dry shrubland there provided pasture for their livestock. They began marching north to their summer pastures at the end of April.
