"Maldhari" is a technical term used to refer to people from different classes and communities. Maldhari means property owner; in this case, property refers to domestic animals. Lions periodically hunted Maldhari cattle for food, but the Maldhari understood the life cycle well. They considered oxen an offering to the lions, with whom they shared territory. The Maldhari have lived in the Gir National Park in the Banni Prairie Reserve area for a thousand years. They have coexisted with lions, which Gir National Park was created to preserve, for these thousands of years.
