Detailed Solution

The above statement is False.
Sri Lanka is a small island nation that has a diverse population. The Sinhala speakers constituted 74 per cent of the country, and the Tamil speakers were only 18 per cent. Most of the Sinhala speakers are Buddhists. The Tamils were mainly Hindus or Muslims. After Sri Lanka gained Independence in 1948, the leaders of the majority Sinhala community secured dominance over the elected government and adopted a series of majoritarian measures to establish their supremacy. One such policy was to declare Buddhism as the official religion. It strained communal relations and eventually led to a civil war.
Thus, the correct statement would be that most of the Sinhala-speaking Sri Lankans practised Buddhism.
