Some of these parties are nationalist organisations with a strong presence in only a few states in India. These parties have grown in number and power during the previous three decades. Before the general elections, one national party obtained a majority in the Lok Sabha.
The national parties were forced to join forces with state parties. Since 1996, almost all of the state parties have had the chance to join a coalition administration at the national level. Federalism and democracy were strengthened as a result of this.
