Raigarh became the capital of Shivaji in the 17th century. In the 17th century, the Maratha ruler, Shivaji constructed his capital city of Raigarh. He was later anointed as the Chhatrapati in 1764. Raigad remained the Maratha kingdom's capital for six years, until his passing. The Raigarh Fort was eventually destroyed by the English in 1818.
