However, the framers of our Constitution envisioned a system of reserved constituencies for the poorer sectors of society. As a result, people from the Scheduled Castes [SC] and Scheduled Tribes [ST] are given priority in some constituencies. Currently, 84 seats in the Lok Sabha are allocated for Scheduled Castes, and 47 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Later, this reserve system was extended to other poorer sections at the district and local levels.
