The Rigveda, the oldest text still in existence in India, contains a hymn in which the Brahman (priest), the Kshatriya (noble), the Vaishya (commoner), and the Shudra (servant) are depicted as having emerged at creation from the mouth, arms, thighs, and feet of the primordial person. This hymn describes the varnas as having four classes: the noble, the commoner, and the servile (purusha).
In accordance with the Varna system of the Dharma-shastras, society is divided into four groups (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishya and Shudras). Expelled members of this system are shunned and viewed as untouchables (outcasts) who do not belong in the varna system because of their horrible misdeeds. The caste system in India is the standard anthropological example of caste. Particularly the British Raj and the Mughal Empire changed it. Its origins are in ancient India, and it was shaped by a variety of ruling elites in mediaeval, early-modern, and contemporary India. This is the basis on which affirmative action programmes are currently constructed in India.
