Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, one of the greatest Indian leaders, shared that his first experience of caste-based discrimination took place when he was nine years old. He had gone with his siblings to the railway station to meet up with his father so they could go to Koregaon. He kept waiting at the station, but his father did not arrive. Seeing this, the station master came to enquire. When he asked them what their caste was, Ambedkar blurted out that they were Mahars. On hearing this, the station master silently left. After a while, when he returned and inquired what they were planning to do, Bhim replied that they had the money to hire a bullock cart. But word had spread that they were Mahars, and so none of the cart men was willing to pick them up. They were denied service because of their "lower" caste. The cart men acted in a discriminatory manner.
