The above statement is true. The caste system is based on hierarchy, hereditary, and labour division—initially, the caste system is a basis for the division of labour. Still, with time, it was made rigid and exclusive and discriminated against the lower caste and the outcast groups. The people belonging to the outcast group were considered untouchables, and untouchability was practised against them. They often lived on the margins of society and were excluded from the social system. They did not have access to education and other opportunities. Thus, they make up the most backward group in society.
