The hangars are a pastoral community in Maharashtra that move in search of pasture. While most Dhangars are shepherds, some are blanket weavers and buffalo herders—the Dhangars move during the alternating rainy and dry seasons. Because the area is arid with insufficient rainfall and nutrient-poor soil, dry crops such as bajra were cultivated. During the rainy season, the lands in the central highlands of Maharashtra become pastures for their cattle. The Dhangars move to the Konkan region at the end of October. Here rich land was available for their herds.
