The historic East African country of Tanganyika, which merged with Zanzibar in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and the Zanzibar Archipelago, was later renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. German settlers invaded the area in the 1880s, and in 1891 the Germans declared the area a protectorate as part of German East Africa. During World War I, Britain conquered German property and became the British Mandate (1920) in the name of the Tanganyika colony. After World War II, Britain maintained control of the region and became a United Nations Trusteeship. Tanganyika became independent in December.
