Before the 1760s, British cotton industries had not flourished, and Indian fine textiles were in high demand in Europe. The East India Company intended to increase its exports from India. However, they faced competition from French, Dutch, and Portuguese traders. It led to competition as weavers and merchants could bargain and try to sell their products to best buy. Thus to supervise the weavers class of India, collect supplies, and examine the quality of clothes, gomasthas were introduced. They acted arrogantly and gave stringent punishment to weavers if they caused any delay in the supplies.
