The government enacted the Child Labour Prevention Act to prohibit child labour. It is a law which prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 years in a factory or any such hazardous environment. Such work of children results in adverse long-term health and socio-economic effects. It was first enacted in 1986. The act was amended in 2016 to prohibit children below 14 years of age in all occupations and adolescents (14 to 18 years) in hazardous occupations. Thus, it made employing children or adolescents in such works a cognisable offence.
